AKARI

A six-room inn in the snow country

THE INN / SINCE 1912

Six rooms stand at the end of a snow road. At dusk, the fifth keeper walks the path and lights each lantern by hand.

The ritual takes seven minutes. Guests usually hear the snow before they see the first light.

01 / THE LIGHTING

One light at a time.

The inn takes its name from the old word for a small, held light. The keeper begins at the gate and finishes beneath the noren.
