YUKI / 54 SQM / OPEN-AIR BATH

THE NOREN / NORTHERN NAGANO
A six-room inn in the snow country
Six rooms stand at the end of a snow road. At dusk, the fifth keeper walks the path and lights each lantern by hand.
The ritual takes seven minutes. Guests usually hear the snow before they see the first light.
The inn takes its name from the old word for a small, held light. The keeper begins at the gate and finishes beneath the noren.
The lantern path, 5:12 pm, heavy snow
Two of each kind. No corridors of identical doors.
Mildly alkaline water flows directly from the source. The outdoor stones face the valley and collect snow through the night.
The outdoor bath, 6:40 am, −4°C
